Instructor Bio


Dr. Andy Young has been a Professor of Psychology and Counseling at Lubbock Christian University since 1996 and a negotiator and psychological consultant with the Lubbock Police Department’s SWAT team since 2000. He also heads LPD'sVictim Services Unit and is the director of the department’s Critical Incident Stress Management Team. He has been on the negotiating team at the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office since 2008, and is on the team at the Texas Departmentof Public Safety (Texas Rangers, Special Operations, Region 5). He is the author of, "Fight or Flight: Negotiating Crisis on the Frontline" and "When Every Word Counts: An Insider’s View of Crisis Negotiations", which contain mostly stories about his work as a crisis counselor and hostage negotiator at LPD (see www.DrAndyYoung.com). He was added as a third author for the 6th Edition of "Crisis Negotiations: Managing Critical Incidents and Hostage Situations in Law Enforcement and Corrections".  Since 2014 he has spoken nationally and internationally at numerous hostage negotiator conferences, as well as other professional and academic conferences on crisis intervention and hostage negotiating.

Course Objectives


Assessment for Violence and for Suicide, Including Psychiatric Conditions

This course will examine predictors of violence and suicide and articulating risk assessments. An introduction to different psychiatric conditions will be included along with intervention considerations.


Family and Community Dynamics

This course will briefly examine the family and community dynamics associated with school violence and ways to address these dynamics.


The Principles of Verbal De-escalation, Influence, and Safety

The instructor has an extensive background in crisis intervention and hostage (crisis) negotiation and will share the principles of these intervention and de-escalation techniques via case studies from the instructor’s work as a hostage negotiator.


Profile of the Estranged Violent Juvenile Offender and School Shooters

This course will consider the published research, including the recommendations given by the US Secret Service, on those who have committed school violence and the characteristics of violent juvenile offenders.


Interview with an (Almost) Active Shooter

The presenter will share the recording of his approximately 1-hour interview with a young man who was seconds away from committing a mass-casualty, active shooter incident.The interviewee outlines in his own words his path to violence and executing his plan for violence.


Responding to Incidents and the Aftermath

This course will examine how to assist people after a traumatic event, including support services, Critical Incident Stress Management, the sharing of information and working with law enforcement.
