Instructor Bio

Brian Niec is a Lieutenantserving as a Shift Commander for the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (IN).Brian has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology & Sociology from Valparaiso University and started his law enforcement career in 2003.

Brian is an accredited Crash Reconstructionist through the Accreditation Commission for Traffic Accident Reconstruction (ACTAR). As part of his dutiesat HCSO, Brian leads the Crash Investigation Team responsible for investigatingand reconstructing serious injury and fatality collisions.  He has also worked in the civil realm of crash reconstruction for various law firms and insurance companies throughout the Midwest since 2011.


Brian has held multiple positions throughout his law enforcement career andattended multiple training courses for various crash-related topics ranging from Pedestrian/Bicycle, Human Factors, Motorcycle, and Commercial Motor Vehicle collisions and has testified regarding these subject matters.

Brian has also attended several courses for mental health, peer support, police officer suicide prevention, critical incident stress management, leadership, and management.

Course Objectives

This course is designed for law enforcement officers to learn about traffic collision events, roadway evidence, vehicular evidence, photography, lamp inspections, information analysis, and mathematical principles and equations.  Interested personnel should display an aptitude toward conducting thorough investigations.  Students will learn howto properly document crash evidence for use in an investigation and courtroom testimony.  The application of mathematical principles and use of a scientific calculator will berequired.
