From Micro to Molecular:
The future of DNA Evidence Gathering

Zak Khan
President
Strand Forensic Technologies

When almost a quarter of all inmates reported that when they get their hands on a handgun, they intended to kill or injure someone , getting firearms out of the hands of criminals becomes frighteningly important. The technology behind this has been catalyzed by Indianapolis-based Strand Forensic Technologies.

Strand Forensic Technologies have developed and patented the TriggerPro ID™ (pat. pending), a kit that can collect minute amounts of trace DNA from handguns, which have historically been difficult to collect fingerprints from. The kit was designed for a law enforcement officer initially recovering the weapon, which allows for minimal contamination of evidence after seizure. Unlike current protocols, handguns will already be swabbed for DNA prior to being sent to the lab, increasing the rate of recovering discernible evidence, which in turn, leads to a better overall chance of obtaining convictions. The kit consists of two high tech swabs, one for the slide or barrel, while the other swab is used for the trigger and handle. Inside of the swab unit sits a patented solution designed to inhibit bacterial growth, DNase enzyme growth, and preserve the delicate DNA for up to a year from evidence collection date.

The officer simply places latex gloves on prior to handling the gun, swabs the gun, places the swabs back into their flexible cases, labels the attached secure-closed plastic bag, and sends it to the appropriate lab to get analyzed.

The preliminary research performed by Strand Forensic Technologies illustrates an impressive over 60% success rate of collecting enough DNA to obtain an analyzable profile. This is compared to an estimated 6% success rate with handgun fingerprint identification. The cost associated with the kit and analysis combined is at least 20% less expensive than the standard fingerprinting techniques. The TriggerPro ID™ (pat. pending) is innovative, easy to use, less expensive and much more effective alternative to fingerprint collection. Strand Forensic Technologies is confident the TriggerPro ID™ (pat. pending) will be an excellent invention for law enforcement professionals throughout the country who are attempting to make our communities safer.
