Instructor Bio

Captain Eric DiLorenzo has been with the Myrtle Beach Police Department for over 21 years and currently serves as the Patrol Division Commander and Police Department Liaison for Emergency Management. He has conducted extensive research and provided training related to Active Shooter related topics since 1999 to over 15,000 people. Capt. Di Lorenzo has created numerous Active Shooter plans for business and schools that includes protocols for before, during and after an incident. In 2008, Capt. Di Lorenzo became a member of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Assistance Program (SCLEAP) which remains very active in. SCLEAP recently deployed Capt. Di Lorenzo to Florence South Carolina to offer peer support after a Mass Shooting to which two Law Enforcement Officers were killed in the line of duty.   Captain Di Lorenzo is a graduate of Georgetown University’s (Washington DC) Executive Master’s Degree in Emergency and Disaster Management where his thesis was studying the impact on officers who have responded to Mass Shootings. In addition to recently been appointed as Adjunct Faculty at Georgetown University, he has attended the 268th Session of the FBI National Academy and serves as an instructor in multiple disciplines. He is certified by ALERRT in Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events and Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) as an Active Shooter Response instructor.

Course Objectives

Due to the high potential threat to an officer’s safety and life as well as seeing deaths among the protected population, an officer’s psychological integrity is greatly threatened. The psychological impact on officers who have responded to Mass Shootings is greater than similar impact on officers who responded any other mass casualty type incidents. A Mass Shooting in a community has far reaching implications to include disruption of services and a reduction in workforce within a Law Enforcement Agency. This session will explore the impacts and provide solutions to get officers and agencies back to their “new normal”.

1.            Students will learn the specific impacts that responding to a Mass Shooting has on an officer. They will also learn why the impacts of responding to a mass shooting are different than responding to other critical incidents.

2.            Students will be able to define terms such as Trauma, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Cumulative stress, Critical Incident Stress and resiliency. Students will also learn the effects of Trauma, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Cumulative stress, Critical Incident Stress and resiliency

3.            Students will learn about specific resources that will help alleviate the psychological impact of PTSD. Students will also learn ways to build psychological resiliency into their departments. 

4.  Students will be given a framework to begin planning now  5. Students will gain information on specific service providers in their area and existing networks that can assist with planning, training and recovery
