Unbiased Policing: Understanding Decision Making and The Difference between Biases and Racism course explains how the human brain develops and processes personal biases. Certain biases can have the appearance of racism. If our law enforcement community fails to grasp and understand specific biases that all humans possess, the appearance of racism, prejudice, or injustice may be the lens that our officers are viewed through. By recognizing biases and properly managing them, our decision making, investigative processes and communication styles will present themselves in a different light.
At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:
Understand how biases are formed
Recognize their own implicit and explicit biases.
Identify various types of biases
Govern biases that may have an impact on decision making
Explain the difference between biases and racism
Police in a manner that lines up with your inherently good intentions and does not present a picture of biases
