News Media Relations

Length of Seminar: 2 Days
Instructor: Ruthanne Gordon

Course Overview:
Everyone is watching the moves you make. Especially, the Media.

News media coverage depends a lot on how YOU handle situations. It can be a "win-win" situation if there's an atmosphere of cooperation between your agency and media.

This course is for everyone who might come in contact with journalists; which means every law enforcement officer on the street - not just Public Information Officers. Of course, you'll learn how to write and deliver an effective press release - but there is so much more to understanding the media than reading a prepared statement.

By working with a former member of the media, you'll learn from the inside out what they really want. This course takes you beyond the duties of a Public Information Officer - it puts you in front and behind the camera - making media decisions. Nothing better prepares you than real experience and no other media course offers you more.

In addition you will learn the business of news, the rating wars, the operations, and how reporters get stories. Understanding the media's "big picture" prepares you to make better "news" decisions.

The purpose of this course is to provide you with the background and tools to handle members of the press. It is meant to help you understand the business and how journalists operate, both on a day-to-day basis as well as in a crisis situation.

  1. Learn the "business" of news: How journalists get their stories, what they are looking for and why they look for certain story angles.
  2. Learn how the Freedom of Information Act impacts what you say.
  3. Learn why pictures can be so important.
  4. Learn how to put together a public information procedure.
  5. Learn how other agencies have handled media identification.
  6. Learn how to handle members of the media at crime scenes.
  7. Learn how to write a press release and dispense information.
  8. Learn how to handle the press in difficult situations.
