Supervision, Management and Leadership Skills for Jail/Corection Officers

Course Overview:

Leadership, supervision and management skills requires skills in managing people as well as a thorough knowledge of jails and jail issues.

In a leadership role the jail supervisor charts the course for the organization, the staffs effort and the ability to accomplish the agency’s mission.

Upon Completion:

As a result of this class students will be able to:

  • Complete a personality profile to be used in identifying both postive and negative traits in self and others
  • Identify those personality traits that promote effective team development
  • List the six pillars of building ethical character
  • List the five standards and principles associated with appropriate behavior
  • Recognize and define the term “Stakeholder” as it pertains to ethics
  • Identify the different levels of communication and demonstrate applicability
  • Identify and list the three elements of affective communication
  • Demonstrate good questioning techniques through practical exercise
  • List the three reactions to stress
  • Explain the dangers of stress, both physical and mental
  • Demonstrate problem solving skills by applying classroom lecture to “real world” scenarios
  • List the seven problem solving methods and use them during practical exercise
  • Explain the four leadership syles
  • List the factors of leadership
  • Define the five steps to affective counseling
  • Explain “Theory X-Y” in relationship to employees and inmates
  • Identify the Constitutional Amendments associated arrest/confinement
  • Identify problem employees/inmates and employ effective behavior modification techniques
