Investigation

Violent Crimes Criminal Profiling Investigative Analysis

Length of Seminar: 3 Days (21 hours)
Instructor: Jon Perry, SA

Course Overview:
The Criminal Investigative Analysis Course (psychological profiling) teaches investigators how to recognize the behavioral aspects of rape and homicide cases while processing the information from these cases for the possibility of serial linkage. By analyzing the case facts, crime scene, victimology and organizational ability of the offender, the student will better be able to understand the offender through the art of behavioral analysis, more commonly known as profiling.

While the class focuses primarily on the crimes of rape and homicide, other relevant issues are examined as well. For example, as a profiler, we primarily deal with behavior observed within the scene by the unknown offender. The focus of this course is to begin to “read” this behavior. Another section deals with the behavioral oriented interview (BOI) of victims of sexual assault. Another portion of the course examines the rapist and homicide offender typologies and post-offense behaviors of each type of killer and rapist. This information is especially helpful in determining what the offender is like, as well as what he/she is likely to do before, during, and after the commission of each homicide or rape. Information is presented by lecture and in-class, hands-on exercises. Audio and video tapes of past offenders further support the training.

Students learn how to analyze the information contained in rape or homicide reports and to use this data to predict if and when the killer or rapist will strike again. Although the student will be taught how to develop a personality profile of the unknown offender, this is not a certifying course. To achieve this goal, the student must participate in the ICIAF Understudy Program which requires two to five years of training and experience in the field while working under the tutelage of a trained profiler. Should the student be interested in achieving this goal, this process will be discussed upon request.

Law enforcement officials send in-service homicide and sex crimes investigators to this Criminal Investigative Analysis (psychological profiling) seminar to enhance their ability to better understand the behavior of the unknown offender and, therefore, increase the likelihood of swift apprehension. Case presentations will be utilized to accentuate the behavioral aspects of various types of offenders. As such, students return to their agencies with not only the knowledge of what they should do, but, more importantly, how to address these complex issues. This course was developed by instructors who are certified through the International Criminal Investigative Analysis Fellowship and the FBI’s National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime. The comprehensive and easy to understand course materials provided to the student will allow the student to better associate crime scenes with the signature behaviors more commonly exhibited by the offender. Attendees should expect a significant amount of graphic material that will be shown in order to facilitate the learning process.
