Hostage Negotiations and Crisis Intervention for Jail and Correctional Facilities

Course Overview:
Introduction To Hostage/Crisis Negotiation: This session will examine the roots of Hostage/Crisis Negotiations. The student will learn the WHY of negotiating and the numerous ways that a Crisis Negotiation Team should be utilized.

Community vs. Correctional Setting: This session will go into detail outlining the differences and unique problems that Corrections personnel face in Hostage/Crisis situations versus their law enforcement counterparts that confront Hostage/Crisis situations in a “street” setting.

Basics of Negotiating: The function and duties of each team member including command personnel, and their understanding and support, will be explained and discussed.

Communication Skills: The student will be given an in-depth overview of Communication Skills. This will include Active Listening and Active Listening Skills. The importance of being able to listen well is a vital and necessary skill to have in order to be a successful negotiator.

Abnormal Psychology For Hostage/Crisis Negotiators: This segment will discuss in layman’s terms the mental disorders that are prevalent during Crisis situations. Identifying the mental disorder and dealing with it in a Crisis Situation.

Case Studies: Each and every hostage and crisis situation is different. The case studies will include the instructors personal involvement as a member of the hostage negotiation team during the Cuban Uprising at the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary involving 1500 hostage takers holding 121 hostages. Other actual case studies will be presented and discussed that have occurred at Correctional facilities from around the country.

How To Survive As A Hostage: Knowing how to survive as a hostage could be a lifesaving skill. Correctional personnel are especially vulnerable to being taken hostage. This portion of the lecture will explain the do’s and don’ts of being a hostage.
